Blogging in Education

In this age of technology, we have so many incredible resources at our fingertips to enhance our teaching. Among these incredible resources is blogging. Student blogs in particular offer a number of unique benefits to the classroom in many different aspects. Many educators concur that blogging has enhanced their students' classroom experience and have seen great success in using student blogs. In her article on the benefits of student blogging, Rachel Dene Poth highlights some of these benefits.

Poth mentions that one benefit of having student blogs is the opportunity it presents to teachers to interact and engage with their students and build relationships with them. The relationship a student has with his or her teacher can have a dramatic effect on the experience that student has in the class. By using a blog, students can more freely and openly interact with their teacher and express their thoughts and ideas. Having a platform - and one outside the classroom and normal classwork - such as blogging really adds another dimension to building that relationship with students.

Another benefit of student blogs is the opportunity to teach the students how to use these technological tools and resources we have in a responsible way. We can teach students the importance and implications of their digital footprint. So often, especially on social media, we see such misuse of a very powerful tool. Whether that be individuals representing themselves in an unprofessional manner, cyber-bullying, or a number of other things. By introducing students to blogging, we are showing them a way to express themselves and use their technological resources in a responsible and structured way.

As a whole, student blogging presents the opportunity to bring an entirely different element to any course; whether it be reading and writing, or even math and science. By having the ability to express themselves in the form of a blog, students may find much more satisfaction and knowledge from the class than they might initially anticipate - and teachers may find that they learn also a lot more from their students by giving them this platform to express their thoughts and ideas.
